【Call】”Q-Energy Innovator Fellowship”for October 2021
“Q-Energy Innovator Fellowship”provides a research grant to excellent doctoral students in Kyushu University who are hopefuls of advancing science, technology and future innovation in Japan.This grant is created in line with the “University Fellowship Project for the Creation of Science and Technology Innovation” established by the Ministry of Science and Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. It offers combined support of funds; research expenses, and research support allowance which aims to free students from financial concerns and enables them to concentrate on their research.
【Applicant Eligibility】
Eligible Applicants should meet the following requirements (1) to (4).
(1) Graduate school students of Kyushu University as of October 1, 2021 who fall under or are expected to fall under;
i First year in doctoral course (less than 12 months) with a standard study period of three years
ii Third year in doctoral course ( between 24 and 36 months) with a standard study period of five years
iii Second year in doctoral course (between 12 and 24 months) with a standard study period of four years
* A leave of absence is not counted if it is six (6) months or more
(2) Under age 30 as of April 1, 2021 (under 33 for medical school students who have taken clinical trainings). If you are above the specified age for such reasons as childbirth or childcare, please state that in the form.
(3) Aspire to engage in decarbonization energy area and willing to work in line with the purpose of human resource development stated in Green Transformation Doctoral Program.
(4) Those who do not fall under any of the followings:
i. Recipient of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science’s Research Fellowship for Young Scientists
ii International student receiving scholarships via the Monbukagakusho Scholarship
iii International student receiving scholarships from their home country
iv Working student An individual who holds a job (an individual who is currently engaged in work for which he or she earns salary, wages, remuneration, or other ordinary income.) , An individual who has already retired from work for which he or she earns salary, wages, remuneration, or other ordinary income ,A stay-at-home mother or stay-at-home father.
v Receive scholarships and funds from other organizations and are not allowed to receive
financial support from the other organizations.
【Fellowship Grant】
(1) Research Support grant: 2.4 million yen per year [200,000 yen per month]
(2) Research Expenses support (for research activities): up to 100,000 yen per year.
The fund which starts or stops in the middle of a month is calculated in accordance with the university rule.
【Pay Period】
The grant payment period is three years.

【Public Offering Restricted to Campus】Q-PIT AY2020 Support Program for Doctoral Students
The Kyushu University Platform of Inter/Transdisciplinary Energy Research (Q-PIT) was established in accordance with the Kyushu University Action Plan. This platform aims to resolve global energy issues in association with promising researchers from various fields, from humanities and social science to natural sciences. Through the resolution of these issues, Q-PIT also aims to create a one-stop solution for energy research and education, and transdisciplinary projects to realize a future energy society that enables sustainable development. As a gateway to success, this program is targeting identification and support of young researchers and doctoral students who will play major roles in future energy research in society.

Projects will be accepted in the following five research areas:
Area 1: Energy Technology
Area 2: Energy Systems and Management
Area 3: Environmental Energy Issues
Area 4: Energy Economy, Society, and Policy
Area 5: Other Energy Issues
[Eligibility and Requirements]
* Support is available to Doctoral students, as well as Master’s students expected to join doctoral programs.
* If you have been previously supported by this Doctoral Support program twice, you are not eligible to apply a third time.
* First-time applicants will be given priority over previous awardees in the case of tied ranking.
[Number of Awards and Amount of Support]
Gold Award: ~1 (500,000 yen)
Silver Award: ~2 (400,000 yen)
Bronze Award: ~5 (300,000 yen)
Encouragement Award: ~20 (200,000 yen)
[Expenses for Research and Further Education]
According to the rank of each award, expenses for research and further education will be offered to the laboratories to which the students who receive the award belong.
Please note that there are no restrictions on the use of research and education incentives, but from the perspective of preventing the spread of new coronavirus infections, efforts must be made to properly execute the expenses under the supervision of the affiliated laboratory.

Kyushu University Energy Week 2020 Poster Presentations
Kyushu University Platform of Inter/Transdisciplinary Energy Research Energy Week is engaged in various activities aiming at realizing a one-stop solution for interdisciplinary integration and energy research education to realize a sustainable future energy society.
“Kyushu University Energy Week” is being held every academic year from 2017 as an opportunity to widely inform the local and society about the efforts of this organization. Even in this academic year, “Kyushu University Energy Week 2020” will be held from January 27th (Mon) to 31st (Fri)2020. “Kyushu University Energy Week” is a major event of energy related research which summarizes energy related events at Kyushu University as an international symposium sponsored by this organization and invites many prominent researchers from home and abroad. As one of the related programs, on January 28th (Tue) 2020, Poster Presentations for young researchers, graduate students, and the fourth year undergraduate students who are responsible for the energy research in the future will be held. We are hoping that the poster presentation will become an active deliberation opportunity for discovering and encouraging innovative research. We look forward to your entries from the bottom of our hearts.

* This program is aimed at the research projects of all fields, from humanities and social
sciences to natural sciences, related to energy. We recommend that you keep an open
mind when deciding whether you will apply for this program, referring to the “List of

on the last pages of these application guidelines.

If a researcher has been adopted under this quota (quota for young researchers) before,
he/she can apply for this support up to twice.
* If the applicant who has been adopted as the principal investigator in the past has the same ranking as the first applicant, the first applicant will be given priority.

[Expenses that can be supported]
0.5 – 1 million yen per research project
(1) Expenses to be covered
Research expenses that can be applied include facilities/equipment, supplies, travel
expenses, honorariums and other expenses required to carry out research.
* If facilities and equipment expenses for the research plan exceed 50 percent of the
total expenses, the applicant must account for the necessity of such expenses in implementation of the research by specifying it in the research plan. A research plan
aiming to simply purchase facilities and equipment, etc. will not qualify for application.
(2) Expenses not covered
The following expenses will not be covered, even though the expenses may be required
for research.
a. Expenses related to buildings and other facilities.
b. Purchases of facilities/equipment such as desks, chairs, and copying machines that
would be normally purchased by each department.
c. Personnel expenses used to employ staff such as administrative assistants
[Other requirements regarding the application]
When applying for the program, the faculty member (special project) or the
post-doctoral fellow or research fellow are required to obtain the approval of the project leader.
A researcher cannot apply as the principal investigator for several categories at the
same time during the same academic year. However, he/she can participate in a research project as a co-researcher.

Regardless of whether it can be realized or not, this research is aimed at developing the concept of a future society energy system configuration to come into existence around the year 2100, one of our platform’s visions. The proposals are expected to be original and ambitious, with an aim to realize a futuristic energy society that enables sustainable development.

Requirements after adoption
(1) Public relations
During the announcement/publication of interim results and for the final outcome of research inside and outside the University, recipient researchers must be active in providing publicity for this program, for instance by openly specifying that the research has received support under this program.
Moreover, recipient researchers and students must actively cooperate with University efforts (such as participating in exhibitions held alongside seminars and symposiums of our platform) to make the research findings publicly available.
When the project is adopted, the recipients must give poster presentations in various events hosted by our platform, such as Energy Week. (Expenses for creating posters can be paid using the support of this program)
(2) Application for competitive funding programs, etc.
The researcher whose program is adopted for the quota of young researchers must apply for Grants-in Aid for Scientific Research (Kakenhi) or other competitive funding programs in the academic year of adoption or in the following academic year.
(This rule does not apply to those researchers who have already acquired funding, such as a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research and will be limited by restrictions on duplicate funds if they newly apply for the program. The rule also does not apply to researchers who have been employed via funding resources and are not allowed to apply for other competitive funding programs.)
The student whose program is adopted for the quota of doctoral students must apply for the research fellowship for young scientists of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. (This rule does not apply to students who have already been adopted for a research fellowship for young scientists.)
(3) Changes in the research plan
Complete the “Statement of reasons for change” and submit it to the Kyushu University Platform of Inter-/Transdisciplinary Energy Research Administrative Office, if any of the following apply.
Ⅰ. If the principal investigator must abandon his/her application for the program due to transfer to another institute, resignation, or other reason, or when the implementation of the research plan has proven too difficult.
Ⅱ. Other than above, when the description in the research plan documentation has been broadly modified.
(4) Reallocation of expenses (quota for young researchers)
When reallocating over 50% of the total allocated expenses from one category to another, submit the “Application for Approval for Change of Breakdown of Research Expenses” to the Kyushu University Platform of Inter-/Transdisciplinary Energy Research Administrative Office in advance.
