Title of the Research | Carbon footprint analysis for tourism in Japan using environmentally extended input-output approach. |
Outline of Research | Tourism demand in Japan is expected to increase over the long term, and CO2 emissions from tourism are also expected to increase. This study aims to develop a new input-output framework which can estimate the carbon footprint per inbound traveler by nationality and per domestic traveler by destination. The results can be used to identify travelers and industrial sectors with large CO2 burdens, and to make demand-side policy recommendations (e.g., a carbon tax on entry into Japan and a carbon labeling system) and supply-side policy recommendations (e.g., carbon subsidies for industries with large CO2 burdens). |
